The Permanent Forum appreciates that Canada, Mexico and the United States expressed their support for the enhanced participation of indigenous peoples in the United Nations system and urges them to work with other Member States in supporting a more robust consultation process, with the aim of creating a new status for indigenous peoples at the United Nations.
The Forum urges the Secretary-General to appoint a special envoy, in consultation with indigenous peoples, to advance the implementation of the Declaration and invites States to support this initiative.
The Permanent Forum encourages Member States to review recommendations made at past sessions, renew efforts at their implementation and report on progress made by 2021. It invites the United Nations system to support the States’ efforts in this regard.
