Addressee: Committee on the Rights of the Child

Paragraph #73Session #2 (2003)

Full Text

The Forum recommends that the Committee on the Rights of the Child, as the treaty monitoring body for the Convention on the Rights of the Child, review the compliance of States Parties with article 24, which recognized the basic right of all children to "the provision of adequate and nutritional foods and clean drinking water, taking into consideration the dangers and risks of environmental pollution", with particular attention to its impact on traditional subsistence foods, and that the Committee address those issues during the day of general discussion on the indigenous child in September 2003.

Responses

On 3rd October 2003, the Committee on the Rights of the Child held a day of general discussion on the Rights of Indigenous Children, in compliance of the recommendations of the UNPFII on indigenous children adopted during session 1 and 2 (2002 and 2003). In its final recommendation, the CRC did not mention specifically the impact of environmental pollution on indigenous traditional subsistence food. However, in para 18 on Health, the CRC recommended that “States parties take all necessary measures to implement the right to health of indigenous children, in view of the comparatively low indicators regarding child mortality, immunization and nutrition that affect this group of children”.
