Addressee: Human Rights Treaty Bodies

Paragraph #77Session #5 (2006)

Full Text

The Permanent Forum recommends that human rights treaty bodies begin to undertake dialogue and cooperation with indigenous peoples’ organizations with a view to discussing the preparation of general comments relevant to indigenous peoples, and that those bodies be encouraged to formulate recommendations and general comments within their competence on the rights of indigenous peoples.

Responses

OHCHR reports that the recommendation was transmitted to the secretariats of the various treaty bodies, which transmitted it to their members for consideration. In 2006, the Committee on the Rights of the Child drafted a general comment on the rights of children with disabilities, which contains several references to indigenous children. The general comment on children’s rights in juvenile justice, drafted in 2007, also mentions indigenous children.
