Paragraph #108Session #4 (2005)

Full Text

The Forum recommends to the United Nations system and States to implement the recommendations on indigenous women made in the report on its third session in the development of programs focused on the goals of the Second International Decade of the World's Indigenous People guaranteeing the involvement of indigenous women

Responses

UNESCO is in the process of improving in-house dialogue on indigenous gender issues and is continually exploring possibilities of strengthening the consideration of indigenous women in its programs. The organization participates actively in the interagency taskforce on indigenous women and is devoting particular attention to the development of partnerships with indigenous women's organizations and women leaders. In this regard UNESCO sponsored a workshop hosted by the Yaaku Peoples Association in Kenya, from 27 September to 1 October 2005. UNESCO is currently consulting with the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and partner agencies to design activities aimed at further exploring the diversity of gender relations in indigenous communities and the recognition of indigenous women's views and roles in the development of their peoples and larger conflict prevention and peace-building initiatives. Please see E/C.19/2006/6/Add.9. UNITAR actively seeks referrrals of indigenous women for each training program. Women compose 40% of training participants with the aim of building on their capacity to analyze sources of conflict, identify the interests and concerns of the various parties involved and affected, and engage in dialogue and negotiation to improve the condition of life for their communities in all sectors. The UNITAR training program invites indigenous women involved in peacebuilding initiatives to participate in the training to share their experiences and challenges with other representatives, and to further enhance the capacity of indigenous women in conflict analysis, negotiation and peacebuilding. Please see E/C.19/2006/CRP.2
