Responses

Special Rapporteur - (b) During 2004, Rodolfo Stavenhagen, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people, continued carrying out a number of activities in the context of the mandate entrusted to him by the United Nations Commission on Human Rights in 2001 and extended in 2003. These activities have focused, first in advancing the conceptual development of some of the main issues that are of great concern to indigenous peoples around the world, second in carrying out visits to a number of countries to study the situation of indigenous peoples in situ and analyze the obstacles and challenges for the full enjoyment of their human rights, and third in making use of his good offices to call the attention of governments to particular human rights situations faced by a number of individuals and even entire communities as well as to request them to take steps to investigate allegations of human rights violations. SPFII - (a) The Permanent Forum and its Secretariat has participated in the meeting of the International Association of Official Statisticians in New Zealand in 2005. In addition, the Secretariat of the Permanent Forum is collaborating with the United Nations Statistics Division to develop a web site as a valuable tool through which to disseminate data on national/ethnic group, language, religion and other topics related to indigenous peoples, which is expected to be completed by the Fourth Session of the Permanent Forum. The Division website will be linked to the website of the Permanent Forum.
