Full Text

United Nations agencies should provide incentives and funding opportunities for indigenous youth organizations to initiate non-formal education activities targeting girls and women. Where initiatives already exist, they should develop replication strategies and scale up existing initiatives

Responses

UNESCO has initiated a Tribal Adolescent Development Program in Bangladesh to create social awareness among the community people and initiate actions to achieve and protect Tribal Rights. The program, which is targeting over 300 tribal men and women, including 89 adolescents, also aims to promote literacy among tribal communities, facilitate life and livelihood skills training for increased family income and establish linkages with governments and NGOs for tribal issues and interests. The Government of Mexico states the following in its report to the fifth session (E/C.19/2006/4/Add.3): A number of actions were taken to strengthen the development of intercultural education for all. In basic education, the Intercultural Bilingual Education Program in the Federal District and the State Intercultural Bilingual Education Program were designed and work began on a project for schools serving indigenous children in seven states: Chiapas, Hidalgo, Oaxaca, Puebla, San Luis Potosi, Veracruz, and Yucatan. Please see report for further details.
