Paragraph #119Session #4 (2005)

Full Text

The Permanent Forum welcomes the initiative of the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) regional office in Mexico with the support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for the creation of a regional inter-agency group on indigenous women, and recommends continuing support for indigenous women's issues and replication of the experience in other regions of the world

Responses

UNIFEM in cooperation with ECLAC, UNDP, PNUMA, UNFPA, UNICEF, ACNUR, IOM and PAHO held the Regional Meeting of Indigenous Women and UN System Organizations in Panama in 2005, where a regional Inter-Agency Support Group for indigenous peoples was established. UNIFEM developed a follow-up strategy with indigenous women's organizations in Central America and Mexico to promote respect for indigenous women's rights. The strategy was developed within the Inter-agency framework and is part of UNIFEM's participation in the Inter-Agency Support Group on Indigenous Issues.

UNFPA and other UN bodies have established an intercultural theme group in Ecuador chaired by UNFPA, in order to link such a perspective to the MDGs. Please see E/C.19/2006/6/Add.7 for more details.
