Addressee: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

Paragraph #71Session #3 (2004)

Full Text

The Forum recommends that UNDP continue its work on supporting local-level initiatives, such as the equator initiative, the community water initiative, the community-based initiative and the assisting communities together project.

Responses

Much of UNDP support to indigenous peoples at the country level is channelled through small grants programs.
The Global Environment Facility small grants program, implemented by UNDP, continues to fund community-based initiatives working with local and indigenous groups to significantly increase the effectiveness of biodiversity conservation and build their capacity for greater impact.
UNDP supports the Equator Initiative and continues its work at the local level. Many indigenous peoples' communities and their organizations have been recognized through the Equator Prize of $30,000, and the intiative has also been working on fostering community-to-community learning and ensuring that community practices will have policy impact.
