Addressee: Artic States

Paragraph #58Session #8 (2009)

Full Text

The Permanent Forum calls upon the Arctic States to provide financial resources to indigenous peoples of the Arctic for the purpose of building a partnership to enable them to adapt to climate change.

Responses

Finland reports (2010): Finland continues to actively promote human rights as part of Arctic cooperation. Finland stresses the need to consult indigenous peoples and to provide them with proper opportunities to participate in decisionmaking in particular on such measures that facilitate adjustment to climate change and have a direct impact on their living conditions.
Finland is actively involved in projects of the Sustainable Development Working Group of the Arctic Council. On-going projects include a study on living conditions in the Arctic Region, a programme on adjustment to climate change and a project examining the impacts of climate change on the reindeer herding in the Northern Calotte region. Finland supports also financially the human rights and environmental protection activities of the Sámi Council.
