The Forum recommends that Governments hold sports and athletic games involving indigenous sports.

Responses

The Government of Finland reports the following:

In Finland, the Government is not involved in actual sport provision or in the organisation of sports events. The role of the government and local authorities is to create favourable conditions for sports and other physical activity. Sport provision is primarily the task of sport bodies.

As regards the implementation of the recommendation in Finland, the Ministry of Education has subsidised the work of the Finnish Sami Sport Organisation with ordinary state sport organisation support. The Finnish Sami Sport Organisation has been accepted as a body eligible for the subsidy under the Sport Act. However, in 2005 the Sami organisation did not apply for the support.

The Government of Norway reports the following:
The Norwegian government provides financial support to the Samediggi that is targeted towards maintaining and developing the language, culture and social structures of the Sami population. Some of these funds are allocated by the Samediggi to the Sami sports organisations for sports events involving Sami sports.
