The Forum recommends that Member States put in place policies and mechanisms to increase indigenous women’s access to markets and capital in order to enable them to turn their traditional skills into sustainable forms of income generation.

Responses

The Government of Finland reports the following:

The mission of some of the subsidised bodies such as Sami artist and youth organisations mentioned under Recommendation 28, is to maintain and promote the Sami handcraft tradition and the possibilities for these crafts to offer a livelihood to Sami people. Especially Sami women, who work actively in these organisations.

The Government of Norway reports the following:
Reindeer husbandry is strongly male-dominated. A working group made up of Sami representatives and representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, and the Ministry of Children and Family Affairs published a report on 22 November 2004 on the situation of women in reindeer husbandry. The purpose is to develop a revitalised and better-targeted gender equality policy in reindeer husbandry, with a view of increasing the participation and influence of women.
